Brahms was born in Hamburg into a poor but musical family. Fortunately his talent was early recognised and he received devoted and first class tuition from local musicians in Hamburg a sophisticated and musical city. Brahms settled in Vienna where he came to be recognised as one of the great musical masters of the century. As a composer of wonderful melodies he can hardly be excelled but his work is also marked by an unforgiving effort towards the highest possible standards.
