For many folk Henry James is the American writer who best depicts the difficult relationship many Americans have with the Europe their ancestors left behind. But to others he just writes with an amazing sensitively about what it is to fall in love, suffer denigration, fail or succeed in life in various ways.
For a writer he could hardly have had a more interesting background. He  was born in New York in 1843. His parents were wealthy and his father a learned man with literary friends.
