In his day – the early part of the 20th century - Joyce was a hated figure in Irish society. His books were banned and his outlook condemned. Today he is seen there as a literary giant and Joyce tours are the backbone of the Dublin tourist trail. He was born in Dublin in 1882 at a time when the Catholic church dominated society. After an education run by the priests of the catholic church he spent most of the rest of his life on continental Europe and rarely returned to Ireland. His writing was difficult to publish  and he had a very tricky but interesting character. However he is now regarded as one of the most important writers of the twentieth century.
