Most of the authors dealt with here are English or Americans writing unsurpisingly in english. But here are poems written in English by a Bengali writer – Rabindranath Tagore. Famous throughout India Tagore was a poet, painter and playwright who was perfectly comfortable working in English and these, his own translations of his poems, give some idea of his unusual talents. Written at the beginning of the twentieth century they were very popular around the world and translated into many languages. Tagore was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. While he was an ardent supporter of the commonalty of mankind they approach the feeling and understanding of humanity from his own very distinctive point of view so we must be ready to take them as they come.
